Why do people visit the beautiful city of Edinburgh?

It is beautiful to see the college town in all its ancient architectural glory. The moment you step into this city and start walking down the cobbled streets, you are likely to be immediately transported to the history pages.

If you are a fan of mystery literature like Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, or even Sherlock, you will love walking through this city.

Nestled in Scotland’s rugged and moody landscapes, Edinburgh is truly one of those old towns that take you back. As you walk through the cobbled streets and tall spires, you can read classic old tales from centuries ago.

With its Gothic architecture and misty hills, the city resembles a scene from a dark academic novel. Making it a favourite for history and literature lovers.

On your regular exploration, you can easily find endless hidden valleys to go through and discover new bookstores and literary cafes.

However, if you still need an itinerary, here is our curated list if you are there for a weekend.

Places to Visit in Edinburgh, Scotland

Here are some of the best places worth visiting in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Explore the Old Town

Start your day in Edinburgh’s Old Town. You should always begin with the one destination which pulled a fellow dark academician like you.

Wander down narrow alleys and winding lanes to explore hidden courtyards and centuries-old buildings.

But for a more curated plan, begin with the Royal Mile, the iconic historic street that connects Edinburgh Castle with the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Then stroll along this cobblestone ‘high street,’ where you’ll find (the much-awaited) old bookshops and vintage stores!

If you are tired of walking, this place also boasts some quaint hideaway cafes.

After some light snacks as you regain your energy, move to the Writer’s Museum. A heaven for literary lovers as you learn about some of Scotland’s most famous writers, including Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott.

Visit Edinburgh Castle

This structure is a place that is straight from your dreams!

High above the city on Castle Rock, Edinburgh Castle has great views over the beautiful old city plus. If you take a guided toure, you can also learn a lot about Scotland’s past. Fair warning, some of the stories might take a little spooky turn.

Check out the Great Hall (which resembles the Hogwarts Great Hall – afterall, Hogwarts was in Scotland), where they used to have medieval banquets.

You can also explore the Crown Room to see the opulent Crown Jewels. For war story lovers, you can also learn about the Scottish military history at the National War Museum within the castle walls.

Literary Café Experience

Lunches have to be saved for exploring the antique cafes. Afterall, this is a writer’s retreat so why not savour the environment while satiating your hunger.

Step out of the castle and make your way to a cosy literary cafe, Elephant House—for lunch.  Yes, OG Harry Potter fans know what I am talking about.

This is the place which brought about the creativity to create the most magical place we will know in the history of literature. Yes, this is the place where Harry Potter was spawned.

Other than the literary delights like soups and sandwiches with great coffee too.

Perfect to cosy up on a winter afternoon while enjoying the moody winter view outside the window. You could write in your journal or read from one of the classic novels in that same setting that motivated J.K. Rowling.

Holyrood Palace and Arthur’s Seat

In the afternoon, walk down the Royal Mile just past Parliament to Holyrood Palace, where British monarchs stayed when they were in Scotland.

You can begin with touring the grand State Apartments and relax in adjacent beautiful gardens.

You cannot go to Scotland, and miss the beautiful highland view. Now you will be going the 44-tower Arthur’s seat; and then take your hike up for panoramic views of Edinburgh and surroundings.

Don’t worry you wouldn’t be tired, it’s a moderate walk but ensure the weather is good for this nature break.

Find Time For Art and Culture

Edinburgh’s galleries and cultural spots make for a perfect pastime as the sun is about to set on the horizon. As an art enthusiast, you will find European and Scottish artists in the neoclassical setting of the Scottish National Gallery.

Plus, the Scottish Gallery of Modern Art is also filled with classical buildings surrounded by sculpture gardens, which are the total dark academia vibes.

Literary Pub Tour

End your day with a literary pub tour of Edinburgh’s historic pubs. Join in on a guided celebration of the city’s literary history from Robert Burns to Ian Rankin.

Plus, you can also grab a whisky and listen to tales about famous writers and poets in Edinburgh.

Things To Remember Before Visiting Edinburgh

Before you plan your visit to Edinburgh there are few things that you may consider in order to make the most of your trip.

Remember to throw a quick glance at the weather forecast and pack a rain coat even if you are visiting in Augustdon’t let those rain showers ruin your day!

On the other hand; plan your place of stay in advance. Especially if you are coming during the peak tourist months when most hotels are full.  This is generally the month of August because of the Edinburgh Festival. Also familiarize yourself with buses and trams while in town to move from one attraction to another.

Enjoy your time in this magnificent city filled with history, scenery and culture.
